Joe Biden
withdraws from the race for the presidential election in November
US President
Joe Biden has withdrawn from the race for the presidential election in
November.
According to
the Reuters news agency, President Biden's withdrawal from the presidential
election race on Sunday as the candidate of the Democratic Party came due to
the party leadership's lack of confidence in him and his health.
President
Joe Biden wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that he will continue his
duties as president and commander in chief until his term expires in January
2025.
He said
that this week he will address the nation.
"Serving
you as president is the greatest honor of my life," Biden said. Although I
intend to contest the re-election, it is in the best interest of the party and
the country that I withdraw as a candidate and concentrate on fulfilling my
responsibility as President for the rest of my term.
President Biden endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate after with
\\drawing from the presidential race.
This is the
first time in the history of the United States that a black woman will be a
presidential candidate.
Biden's
withdrawal from the race comes after pressure from members of the House of
Commons and the Democratic Party to leave the race.
Pressure on
President Biden to withdraw as the party's nominee has increased significantly
after his poor performance in the presidential debate against rival candidate
Donald Trump on the 27th of last month.
During this
debate, due to President Biden not being able to fully pay for several
sentences, the public's attention shifted away from several false statements by
the opponent Trump and focused on his health.
During the
NATO summit, President Biden's naming of Russian President Vladimir Putin
instead of Ukrainian President Zelensky and naming his vice president as 'Vice
President Trump' further fueled concerns about his health.
President
Biden was diagnosed with the coronavirus for the third time just four days
before announcing his retirement on Sunday, forcing him to cut short his
campaign in Las Vegas.
One out of
every 10 Democratic members of the US Congress has publicly called for
President Biden's resignation.
This is the
second time in the history of the United States that Biden has decided to
withdraw as the current president during the election campaign. The first time
President Lyndon Johnson resigned was in 1968.
