Is it
dangerous if your body parts are in the wrong place?
Usually
the organs of the human body are in their place in an order which makes it easy
to diagnose certain diseases.
For
example, if someone has appendicitis or gallstones, they will tell you where
they are experiencing excruciating pain. But sometimes it has been observed
that the organs are in the 'wrong' place instead of their normal place.
One of
the most unusual things from an organ development point of view is
dextrocardia, in which the heart is on the right side of the chest instead of
slightly to the left (known as leucardia). This condition is quite rare and one
in 12,000 people are born this way.
When this
happens in the absence of other abnormalities i.e. unnatural conditions, people
lead a normal life and in such a case only the various 'symptoms' show up on
the echocardiogram (ECG).
Some
people may have all the abdominal and chest organs in the opposite direction,
which is called sites inversus totalis. Singers Donnie Osmond and Enrique
Iglesias, as well as actress Kathryn O'Hara, also suffer from this condition.
Osmond's
condition was diagnosed when his doctor overlooked appendicitis during
complaints of pain because he was experiencing pain on his left side instead of
his usual right side.
Cytes
inversus totalis is relatively rare and occurs in about one in 10,000 people.
It is usually seen more in men. In some people, only the heart and lungs may be
the target site. This is called sites inversion.
Teeth are
seen in different places in the human body
So far,
more than 100 genes have been identified that play a role in ensuring that our
organs develop normally in the right place. Site inversions are inherited when
both parents carry a defective copy of the same gene.
If these
people are healthy, they may never show any symptoms of the condition. In fact,
there are reports of people living longer than average life expectancies and
living well, only to be diagnosed with the condition after they die.
In very
rare cases, people with situs inversus totalis have levocardia.
This is the condition that causes the heart
and lungs to return to their 'normal' configuration on the left side.
Life
expectancy is affected in dextrocardia and sites inversus totalis only in cases
of other heart disorders.
A tooth
is one thing in the human body that often appears in a different place than its
usual place. Many people experience teething in their noses, causing symptoms
such as nosebleeds and infections.
There
have been cases of teeth being found in the eyes of some people. These can be
difficult to remove when they become firmly embedded in the bone
Hiatal
hernia is more common in women and overweight people:
Sometimes
body parts start growing in the wrong place due to a structural problem.
A hernia,
or bowel, grows into the chest or protrudes beyond where it should be.
There are
regular openings in our diaphragm, the membrane of the abdomen, a sheet of
muscle that helps us breathe and another that allows blood vessels and the
esophagus to pass through.
Because
of the diaphragm, the organs of the chest stay in the chest and the organs of
the abdomen in the abdomen. However, under certain conditions these openings
can become weak and increased pressure (coughing, sneezing, or straining) can
force things through them.
The
liver, parts of the small intestine, and the large intestine can extend into
the chest.
It is
usually seen that part of the stomach is pushed through the opening of the
esophagus to cause the hernia. A hiatal hernia is very common and affects one
in four people by the age of 40, rising to 55 to 60% in people over the age of
50, but many people have it. No symptoms appear.
Hiatal
hernia is more common in women and overweight people:
One type
of hiatal hernia that can be dangerous is the paraesophageal hernia, which can
strangle the stomach and cut off its vital blood supply. In such cases,
emergency surgery is required.
Another
type of hernia is inguinal hernia. In this condition, pieces of intestine can
enter the lower abdomen directly through the opening and possibly into the
esophagus.
Inguinal
hernias are more common in men. Women have a three percent chance of developing
it, while men have a 27 percent chance of developing it.
In some
cases, a large hernia can reach the knee level. A different type of inguinal
hernia may protrude through the wall of the canal instead of through a natural
opening. It is rare but more common in older male patients.

Prolapse
or displacement of organs:
One
problem is the misplacement of organs due to prolapse. This process is
especially seen in women where the uterus can slip into the vagina.
In the
most severe cases, it can spread outside the vagina. It can occur during
pregnancy and childbirth and represents a significant risk.
Risk
factors for uterine prolapse include having multiple babies born naturally
vaginally, being overweight, chronic constipation, and older age.
Although
misplaced organs and structures can seem unpleasant, our ability to diagnose
and treat many of these conditions has improved the quality of life for many
who suffer from them.
