Ismail
Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, was killed in Tehran, the capital of Iran
Iranian
authorities say that Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the Palestinian militant
organization Hamas, has been killed in Iran.
According to
Arab News, Iran's state television announced the killing of Ismail Haniyeh
early Wednesday, which Hamas confirmed.
Revolutionary
Guards have said in a statement that Ismail Haniyeh and a security guard were
attacked at their residence.
Revolutionary
Guards said that how the incident happened is not yet known, but the
investigation is ongoing.
Ismail
Haniyeh, head of the political wing of Hamas, was on a visit to Iran to attend
the swearing-in ceremony of reformist President Masoud Pizshakyan.
The
62-year-old Palestinian leader met Masoud Pizshakyan and Ayatollah Ali
Khamenei.
A senior
official of Hamas, Sami Abu Zahri, said that the Israelis' murder of brother
Haniyeh is aimed at breaking the spirit of Hamas and our people and achieving
false goals. We assure that with this move they will fail to achieve their
goals.
He added
that "Hamas is an ideology and an institution, not individuals."
Hamas will continue on this path regardless of the sacrifices and we are sure
of success.
"Targeting
Ismail Haniyeh is a heinous terrorist crime and a flagrant violation of laws
and ideal values," said Muhammad Ali al-Houthi, the leader of Yemen's
Houthi rebels.
The war
between Israel and Hamas began when the militant group attacked Israel on
October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking 253 hostages.
After this
operation, Israel started a series of bombings on the Gaza Strip, showing its
intention to eliminate Hamas, in which more than 40,000 people have been killed
so far.
Both sides
are trying to negotiate a hostage release deal that includes an end to the war,
with the help of the United States and regional mediators.
Recall that
in April, Iran said its embassy in Damascus was destroyed and a top general was
killed, which Tehran blamed on Israel.
After the
attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Iran launched drones and missiles
at Israel, which were shot down by Israel.
Further
tensions between the parties were averted through diplomacy.
